Spa Music

Spa Music - Blythswood Square Spa
THE CHALLENGE: Spa MusicSpa music is traditionally done very badly - all cheesy 'whale song' cds and dated 'chill out' compilations. At Open Ear, we believe it can be done much better - and offer a music solution that will benefit any spa experience.
More than perhaps any other space, music is necessary to set the mood for a spa and is crucial factor in the getting the customer in the right frame of mind before their treatment. If it is designed correctly, it will enhance customer experience and add value, if it is done badly, it will do the opposite. During the treatment itself, music should be designed to fit not only the type of treatment, but also the customer themselves - their mood, tastes, demographic and more should be considered.
EXAMPLE: Open Ear and the Blythswood Square Spa

Open Ear are an award winning music design company working to provide music solutions to various types of business. We focus on harnessing the psychology of music to help create the perfect soundtrack to any space.
We have been working with the Blythswood Square Spa in Glasgow since it opened in 2010. The following is a description of how we designed playlists for each zone in the Spa following a full consultation. The playlists are delivered via our online music software package with a player that automatically updates and adjusts according to the time of day -

The Cafe / Reception - This area is where customers come to when they first enter the spa and also the area they come to after they finish their treatments. The music is crucial in creating the right first impression: that they have entered a sanctury in the middle of a busy city. It is also crucial in creating an uplifting feeling for those who have just finish their treatments and are feeling refreshed but not quite ready to re-enter the normal world.
The Relaxation areas / Corridors - After a customer has checked in, they are lead to the relaxation area. Here the music sets the scene for their treatment ahead - tracks are chosen on the basis of tempo, texture, energy rating and more to create the ultimate ambient music experience. We focus on modern ambient styles that help customers transport themselves to their personal relaxation place.
The Treatment Rooms - Traditionally, music played during treatment is often selected by the therapist without giving customers a chance to have a say. To counter this, we created a number of playlist options that are designed to create different moods and fit different customer demographics. We conducted a few sessions with the therapists to explain about the types of playlist available to help them make an informed choice. We also created a 'music menu' - giving customers the chance to select the music that best fits their taste and mood.
RESULT:
The music on the playlists avoid the usual whale song selections by providing a much more modern alternative with music that better fits what customers expect from a highend spa experience. Our selections add-value to the spa offering helping the Blythswood maintain it's reputation as the leading inner city Spa in Scotland.
Leon Trayling, Spa Manager at the Blythswood Square gave us this recommendation:
"Using Open Ear has helped us create the perfect atmosphere in all areas of our spa. Open Ear use the psychology of music to create bespoke playlists that perfectly fit our customer tastes and the Blythswood Square brand, helping our spa stand apart. The special focus on the treatment room music is a great addition - the range of playlist options have helped enhance how our customers experience their treatments. I would thoroughly recommend Open Ear to any Spa's looking to improve their music."
